She doesn't understand it.

She's done everything she can, tried every trick she knows- but some way, somehow, Phylus completely defies being taught. It's not even for a lack of trying on his part, he just... sucks. She plucks her spare bass out of his hands with a sigh, and settles down right next to him, re-tuning the strings carefully. Somehow, he'd managed to actually tug them out of tune during his near-frantic practicing. She'd have thought it impossible if she hadn't been standing there watching him do it. She draped the instrument across her lap when she finished her upkeep, and then turned her head to look at him, fingers drumming on the body of the bass idly. She opens her mouth to say something, but doesn't and just picks up the instrument and motions for him to pay attention.

She goes over what she's been trying to teach him slowly, leaning against his shoulder so she can make sure he's close enough to see what she's doing properly. If she notices him tense up at the proximity, she doesn't mention it, and instead stops and shoves the bass at him with a slight rise of her eyebrows. He takes the bass with trembling hands, and does his best to mimic what she's been doing.

The fact that she moves to stand behind hm and instruct him over her shoulder doesn't help in the slightest.
