MAGES

[personal profile] flowerwhisperer 2013-03-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
SO. Canon recently debunked Scrib headcanon by confirming Witches are an active class! Which means Mages aren't the active counterpart. Canon also has not given any more actual details on the Mage class afaik so rn Mage class is in a limbo.

General fanon consensus is Mages are passive counterparts to Witches or active counterparts to Seers! I am personally leaning more towards the latter than the former, BUT LET'S TALK? Idk my bff homestuck classes.

Damn you Hussieeeeeeee.

Actually, considering the two characters that are Mages in canon, I'm inclined to say that Mage is a Passive class rather than an active one. Mainly because our two mages (Sollux and Meulin) have very active personalities- Sollux in terms of his combat capability with his psionics, and Meulin with her more or less meddling/shipping all her friends (and pretty much everyone/thing else) ALL THE TIME- so giving them passive classes in the game would have been more of a challenge for them (as S---B is prone to doing) than giving them an active class.

Also in regards to the Witch/Mage active/passive pairing, I can see it both because those are two 'magic' related classes that are opposite each other in terms of terminology- 'Witch' being female and 'Mage' being more male/gender neutral in terms of assignment.

tl;dr- I feel Mage is a passive class due to canon personalities/occurrences.

Pretend this is the right account

Thinking about it mages as a passive class would make a lot of sense! Especially in how the canonical mages have been manipulated in ways related to their aspects.

Degen also brought up on Plurk that the mages in canon are also associated with destruction in some manner, which is interesting! And opens up hilarious possibilities for mages as an offensive class, especially considering who our mages are whoops.

Yeah, the wiki mentions Sollux being manipulated by the voices of the dead, and I guess being mind-controlled by your ex-matesprit counts as being manipulated by your heart- though I feel like I have to bring up that Heart as an aspect is tied more into the 'soul', though considering we haven't seen any Heart players in action canonically, I don't know how that actually works.

As far as the canon Mages go- Sollux is a doom player, so I understand his being associated with destruction, but Meulin is the Mage of Heart and I don't see her actively being related to anything destructive-- unless you mean the Kurloz thing, which frankly has nothing to do with her aspect and more her choice of company.

I always interpreted that emotions kind of fall under the "soul" bit, but idk my bff homestuck sob

I'm leaning more towards Mages as Witches' passive counterpart now in any case 8|a Though I'm still stumped as to what Mages actually do hmmm

WITCHES

so basically the only concrete info we have on witches is that they're an active class as opposed to passive like we first assumed umu sooooo yeah let's figure this out i guess??

there's some speculation about the class here. personally i'm leaning toward the expansion and size manipulation of their aspect, but i am totes open to discussion!

the main reason i'm making this response is to say "and then the grinch's heart grew three sizes that day" because that was the first thing i thought of when i saw "size expansion"

That said, I'unno if I agree with expansion and size manipulation for Witches because that, by concept, seems like a Spacey Thing instead of a Witchy Thing since mass and physics and stuff. I'm not up-to-date on what the other classes are in-game headcanon'd as or whatever, but they seem to me like they just use their aspect to (strongly?) influence the world around them because that sounds like an active sort of thing maybe.

I mean, Feferi could have potentially done Lifey Things mainly to others considering GodTierFef healed WV but there wasn't a self-heal Lifey Thing like with Jane as the Maid of Life. Also, it seems like it might go along with Jade's stuff as well, since the only stuff she really seems to have been doing with her Spacey Thing was with the wall in Cascade. On the other hand, she also has First Guardian powers so I don't really know if she counts for much.

i seriously rambled out two paragraphs of words just so that i would contribute something more than that grinch thing oops

I always felt like witches were meant to act as a magical manipulator of their aspect -- so like Damara knows how to show up at just the right time to fuck everyone over with her Witch of Time powers, and Jade knows exactly how to make things fly/get bigger/deflect objects as the Witch of Space.

So idk when I play Jade I always see it as "magically in tune with your aspect" in a way that can manipulate the environment around you; same when I play Damara.

SYLPHS

[personal profile] polygraphing 2013-03-31 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
sylves? WHAT IS THE PLURAL OF SYLPH

anyway all we know about sylphs is that they are some sort of healer class. aranea didn't give us many details, but as a sylph of light she can help people to see, both metaphorically and literally. when combined with her aspect, it makes sense that a sylph of LIGHT would heal people to SEE, since you cannot see the light if you are blind.

i think from this we can infer that sylphs can heal along a theme determined by their aspect. this implies that sylphs are actually fairly limited in what they can heal for the most part since is has to fit in to the theme, but i think there is also some interpretation involved as sylphs can heal both literally and metaphorically. the only exception to this would probably be a sylph of life, which could probs heal just about anything due to being a healer class paired with a healer aspect.

also the question as to whether sylphs are passive or active has yet to be answered by canon, and frankly i think you can make a case for either, though passive feels more likely to me personally.

SEERS

[personal profile] defensivealchemist 2013-04-08 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Actual most developed class, or close to it. Thanks to Rose and Terezi's account of their powers and Aranea providing info dumps. Kankri didn't help.

So Seers see things. They perceive the possible outcomes of the game, through the means of their aspect, and have the power to try to guide their party to a Good End.

Essentially, wreck shit in some way or another via their aspect- whether by helping or hindering with it.

Thoughts?
